PHNOM PENH– The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said on Tuesday that Cambodian population will reach 18.7 million in the next decade with the current growth rate at 1.54 percent per annum which foreign expert viewed the trend as moving on the right direction.
American professor Dr. Patrick Heuveline, of UCLA, who presented his research on the global population and development, said “I see a lot of positive trends of Cambodian demography.”
“I see the trend right now in Cambodia is in the right direction.”
“My recommendation is to keep them in that direction, already people here decided to have few kids,” said Heuveline.
Cambodia’s total population was 13.39 million in 2008 and it was 11.44 million 1998, said the report shared by Cambodian government.
He however said that it would be better if the growth rate will go down a bit.
“Meaning it would be easier to accommodate the growing number of peoples.”
If population grows fast it will make things bit hard, he said.
“So, the smooth trends are better than the very rapid changes,” Heuveline warned.
The report, which detailed on the migration and development in Cambodia, joined by Cambodia said that Cambodian GDP per capita is projected to US $842 for this year thanks to the growth in industry and service sectors.
“Most of this is attributed by the growth in industry and services sectors,” said the report was released on Tuesday.
GDP per capita increased from $455 in 2005 to $716 in 2008, it said.
“The increases of capital investment in many main cities are substantial.”
“As a result, job offers are high in those urban areas,” said the report.
The main urban areas such as the capital Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, the country’s biggest tourist destination; and two other provinces near the Thais border, where “a high urbanization rate due to the economic boom that results from the substantial increases in industrial and tourism sectors which growth rapidly,” it said.
In 2008, Cambodia had about 360,000 workers worked for the garment sector. While, the construction sector offered as many as 260,000 workers, said the report was seen by DAP.
Cambodia received 2.16 million foreign tourists last year from 2.12 million in 2008.
It was 2.01 million tourists for 2007, and in 2006 Cambodia received 1.7 million foreign arrivals, according to statistics was released by tourism ministry.
The kingdom’s tourism is expected to increase 15 percent a year.
The UNFPA report did not predict Cambodian growth, but there has been number of publication that the country’s economic growth was an estimated contracted 2.2 percent 2009 and is projected to increase 4.2 percent for 2010.
Cambodia’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) hit record $4 billion in 2006, according to the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC).
According to the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) said the FDI value for 2007 was $866 million.
Foreign investment lowered to $795 million for 2008. It further dropped to $515 million in 2009.
The country produced more than 7 million tonnes of rice for 2009/2010.
Cambodia expected to produce first oil by 2011.
