A local human rights official said the government's legal actions against opposition Sam Rainsy for document forgery and for spreading disinformation had sent a bad signal to the world, reports Deum Ampil.

Mr. Sam Rainsy, leader of the eponymous Sam Rainsy Party, was convicted and sentenced in basentia on 27th January to 2 years jail for leading villagers to uproot 6 wooden border stakes along the Khmer-Vietnamese borders on 25th October 2009.

On 12th March, the government had officially laid another charge against Sam Rainsy for document forgery and disinformation after he published a series of documents and maps showing border encroachments by Vietnam.

Mr. Chan Soveth, investigator for the human rights group Adhoc, said the government should drop all charges against Mr. Sam Rainsy and make an effort to reach a political solution to the border issues. He said both Mr. Sam Rainsy and Prime Minister Hun Sen are patriots alike, and the fact that Mr. Sam Rainsy talked about border issues because he is concerned about Cambodian territorial integrity. As a result, the government should drop all charges against him. "His past actions are not criminal offences. If they are not criminal offences, they must be political issues that must be resolved through political means", he said.
